Arts and Entertainment
The Newton Theatre (SkyPAC)
The historic Newton Theatre at 234 Spring Street is operated by the Skylands Performing Arts Center (SkyPAC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. It is the biggest live entertainment venue in town, with a calendar heavy on touring tribute acts, bluegrass, rock and roots music. In October 2026 alone the lineup included an Allman Brothers tribute, The Del McCoury Band and the Artimus Pyle Band.
The calendar changes often, so check SkyPAC’s site for upcoming shows. The box office number is 973-940-6398 (973-940-NEWT).
Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council Gallery
The Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council runs a gallery at 133 Spring Street with rotating exhibitions, workshops and classes. As of fall 2026, gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday noon to 4 p.m., or by appointment. The council also promotes Sussex County Heritage Weekend, held each October; see our Heritage Weekend guide.
Coming up: the council lists a Thomas Edison Film Festival screening on Sunday, October 25, 2026, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Sussex County Community College Student Center Theater, 1 College Hill Road. Tickets are listed at $25, or $10 for students. The gallery’s Saturday hours on Halloween, October 31, were still to be announced at publication, so call (973) 383-0027 first.
History in Newton
Sussex County Historical Society
The Sussex County Historical Society is based at the Hill Museum, 82 Main Street. The society preserves county history and is currently working on restoration of the Old Newton Academy and the Tully House. Hours are not posted on its homepage, so call 973-383-6010 before visiting.
Newton Fire Museum
The Newton Fire Museum occupies the historic Spring Street firehouse at 150 Spring Street, built in 1891. Per the Town of Newton, its collection includes firefighting equipment from the era of horse drawn apparatus. The town does not list hours, so check the museum’s own channels before you go. It is an easy add on to a Spring Street walk with kids.
Spring Street and the Town Green
Spring Street is the heart of downtown, a historic commercial district that the Town of Newton highlights for its shops and eateries, with public parking throughout downtown. The Newton Town Green sits at the top of the district. A good walk starts on the Green, heads down Spring Street past the Arts and Heritage Council and the Fire Museum, and ends at the theater.
Two of our favorite downtown stops are written up on our site: the student run Arbor Bakeshop, and the newly renovated county library branch, covered in our post on the Dennis Branch Library renovation.
Parks and Outdoors
Memory Park
Per the Town of Newton recreation page, Memory Park sits near the heart of Newton, close to Spring Street and the Route 206 corridor. It has a full size 90 foot baseball diamond, Little League and softball fields, a full size soccer field, a youth football field, a playground for ages 2 to 9 and a shady picnic grove. The Newton Town Pool is also at Memory Park and is free for Newton residents.
Pine Street Park and Summit Avenue Park
Pine Street Park has youth soccer fields, a small playground, an updated basketball court and Pine Street Pond, which the town notes is a favorite for frog catching. Summit Avenue Park has a small shelter and benches by a pond and is popular with dog walkers. The town also maintains a dog park.
