The 16th annual Sussex County Heritage Weekend runs Saturday, October 10, and Sunday, October 11, 2026, with museums, historic sites and historical societies across the county opening their doors. The Sussex County Arts & Heritage Council organizes the weekend, and an interactive map and brochure are posted on its Heritage Weekend page.

In Newton, the council hosts the Revolution 250 Traveling Exhibit at 133 Spring Street. It is open Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and it looks at American Revolution stories through the experiences of everyday people.

In Layton, Peters Valley School of Craft, 19 Kuhn Road, presents the exhibition Posters for the People: Art of the WPA on both days from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The show features original New Deal era posters from 1936 to 1943 and marks the 90th anniversary of the Works Progress Administration.

In Sparta Township, a live train demonstration runs at the Sparta Train Station, 30 Station Road, both days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sunday adds several more stops. A Fall Festival and Car Show runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Newton. A history talk, Women and the American Revolution, takes place from 1 to 2 p.m. at 219 Spring Street, Newton. A Pop-Up Art Show is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Newton Municipal Building, and Van Campen Day runs from noon to 4 p.m. in Walpack Center.

Saturday also brings the Fall Mineral Festival to the Sterling Hill Mining Museum, 30 Plant Street, Ogdensburg, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on October 10, according to the museum’s special events page. That event is listed separately from the Heritage Weekend schedule.

The council’s page does not list admission prices, so we recommend checking with each site before you head out. With so many stops spread across the county, picking two or three and building a route is an easy way to see a lot of Sussex County history in a single fall weekend.
