Our team is pointing Friday morning coffee runs toward downtown Newton: the Arbor Bakeshop at Sussex County Community College’s Culinary Institute is open again for the semester, with student-baked pastries and specialty drinks at 47 Main Street.
According to SCCC’s September 30, 2026 announcement, Baking and Pastry Arts students run the shop Fridays from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. through May. Pair a stop with our guide to where to eat in Newton, or plan a full fall day with Lentini Farms Fall Fest nearby.

What students are baking this semester
SCCC says this semester’s lineup includes croissants, donuts, scones, quiche, cinnamon rolls and more, with specialty coffees and teas. The Culinary Institute’s live bakeshop page lists current pastry prices such as croissants at $4, pain au chocolate and almond croissants at $5, kouign-amann at $4, a gluten-free éclair du jour at $4, and cannelés at $3. Espresso drinks, lattes, teas and hot chocolate round out the beverage board, with flavor shots and oat milk among the add-ons posted on the same page.
That short Friday window is popular for a reason. Students bake for real customers as part of their Baking and Pastry Arts coursework, so the case turns over quickly. Arriving closer to opening gives you the widest pick of the day’s batch.

Weekly specials and how to preorder
Weekly specials are available for preorder. SCCC asks that orders be placed by Tuesday for Friday pickup, which helps if you are grabbing treats for the office or weekend guests. The shop shares the Culinary Institute building at 47 Main Street in Newton, the same address as Arbor Restaurant’s student dining program on the college’s Culinary Institute site.
Arbor Restaurant itself runs student-cooked prix fixe meals during the semester on a separate schedule from the bakeshop’s Friday mornings. For classes, workshops and dining events beyond the pastry counter, SCCC points visitors to sussex.edu/culinaryinstitute.

Why we like this Newton bakery stop
Arbor Bakeshop is a rare public bakery where every croissant supports a local culinary classroom. Hours, prices and the through-May Friday schedule come straight from Sussex County Community College’s Culinary Institute pages, including the September 30, 2026 reopen notice and the current bakeshop menu. Downtown Newton is a short hop from campus and Spring Street dining, so a pastry run fits easily before brunch, shopping or a fall farm stop.
