Looking for the best Christmas tree farms Sussex County NJ has to offer? The Skylands is one of the best places in the state to cut your own tree, with choose-and-cut fields from Augusta to Wantage and a precut lot in Vernon. Below, our team rounds up farms located in Sussex County whose own websites we checked, with addresses, what each one grows, and how they run their season.
Most of these farms open around Thanksgiving weekend and run through December weekends, but each farm sets its own schedule, and several had not posted 2026 hours yet as of mid October. We note what each farm says on its own site, and we recommend checking the farm’s website or calling before you drive out.

The abbey’s website does not list tree varieties, hours or payment details, so call the abbey at 973-383-2470 before you go.

Know before you go: tips for cutting your own tree
- Measure first. Measure your ceiling height and the width of the spot where the tree will stand before you leave home. Leave room for the stand and a tree topper. Trees always look smaller standing in an open field than they do in a living room.
- Bring a tape measure. It makes it easy to check height and width in the field instead of guessing.
- Saws. Am-Jac and Hilltop Greens say they provide saws. If you bring your own, make it a hand saw: Hilltop Greens bans power equipment, and other farms may too.
- Bring cash. Am-Jac is cash only, and smaller farms often prefer it. If a farm’s site does not list payment methods, assume cash and ask about cards.
- Rope, a blanket and gloves. Even if the farm bales your tree, bring rope or ratchet straps and an old blanket to protect your car roof. Work gloves help with sap and needles.
- Dress for mud. Tree fields are often wet or frozen in late November and December. Wear boots.
- Go early in the season for the best selection. Opening weekend usually has the widest choice, and small farms can sell out of certain sizes or varieties.
- Check pet rules. Am-Jac welcomes leashed dogs, while Indian Ridge does not allow pets.
- Fresh cut at home. If your tree was cut more than a few hours before it goes in the stand, trim a thin slice off the base so it can take up water, and keep the stand full.
