Looking for things to do in Stanhope NJ? This small borough at the southern tip of Sussex County packs a lot into a compact area: a shallow, paddle friendly lake, a walkable Main Street built along the old Morris Canal, and some of the most recognizable attractions in the Skylands just over the line in Byram Township.
Our team put together this guide to what is actually in Stanhope, what sits right next door with a Stanhope mailing address, and how to get here, including by train. Our team checked the details below against official borough, state and business sources in fall 2026, but hours and seasons change, so check the official sites before you go.
Get to Know Stanhope
Stanhope began as a forge town in the late 1700s and spent roughly 140 years as an iron producing community, thanks to the Musconetcong River and nearby supplies of ore, wood and limestone, according to the Borough of Stanhope’s history page. The Morris Canal ran through the heart of town, and many of the old Main Street stores served as depots for canal goods heading into upper Sussex County. Stanhope was part of Byram Township until it incorporated as its own borough in 1904, and iron making here ended around 1925.
That history explains a detail that confuses a lot of visitors: several of the best known places “in Stanhope” actually sit in Byram Township and simply share the 07874 Stanhope mailing address. We note which is which below.
Things to Do in Stanhope Proper
Lake Musconetcong
Lake Musconetcong is Stanhope’s front yard. Per NJ Fish and Wildlife’s 2009 lake management plan, the lake covers about 329 acres along the Sussex and Morris County border, touching Stanhope, Netcong, Byram and Roxbury, and it is part of Hopatcong State Park. It is shallow, with a maximum depth of about 8 feet and an average under 5 feet, which makes it a calm spot for kayaks and canoes.
Anglers will find a long list of species recorded by the state, including largemouth bass, chain pickerel, black crappie, yellow perch, bluegill and channel catfish. The state’s plan notes a public boat ramp and parking area in the southwest part of the lake near the dam.
Main Street and the Morris Canal
Stanhope’s Main Street is short, historic and easy to explore on foot. Borough Hall sits at 77 Main Street, and the street still follows the route that made the town a canal hub in the 1800s. The borough history draws on the Historic Stanhope Tour Guide by the Musconetcong Foundrymen Historical Society, a good read if you want to know which buildings date to the iron and canal era, including worker housing from around 1820.
Bell’s Mansion at 11 Main Street sits above the historic Morris Canal and is one of the town’s anchor stops for dinner or a drink on the patio.
Borough Trails and Walkways
The borough publishes free maps of its pedestrian trails and walkways, plus a separate map of the Tri-Community Trails shared with neighboring towns. You can download them from the Stanhope trails and walkways page. They are a nice way to stretch your legs before or after a meal on Main Street.
Community Events
Stanhope’s borough events calendar lists community happenings through the year, including Stanhope Day. Check the calendar for current dates before you plan around an event.
Where to Eat in Stanhope
Stanhope punches well above its size for food. Two longtime favorites:
- Bell’s Mansion, 11 Main Street: American fare using herbs and produce from its on site garden, a craft beer and cocktail Tap Room, garden patios and Sunday brunch.
- Black Forest Inn, 249 US Route 206: German and Continental cooking, family run since 1978, with weekend Oktoberfest celebrations in October.

Right Next Door: Byram Township Attractions with a Stanhope Address
Waterloo Village
Waterloo Village is a restored 19th century Morris Canal town at 525 Waterloo Road. It uses a Stanhope mailing address, but it is in Byram Township, Sussex County, according to its National Register of Historic Places nomination, and the Byram Township website lists it under Allamuchy Mountain State Park. The grounds are owned and operated by New Jersey State Parks and open daily from dawn to dusk, and the Canal Society of New Jersey opens its canal museum, canal boat exhibit and gristmill on Saturdays in season. A walk along the canal, Smith’s Store and the old lock is an easy, free afternoon. Our team is publishing a full Waterloo Village guide shortly.
Wild West City
Wild West City at 50 Lackawanna Drive is a recreated frontier town with a train ride and staged gunfights, best known as a summer family attraction. It also uses a Stanhope address but sits in Byram Township. In October it turns into a Halloween stop, and our Haunted Wild West City guide has the 2026 nights and times. Check the park’s official calendar for the regular season.
The Sussex Branch Trail
The Sussex Branch Trail, a flat, roughly 20 mile rail trail, has its southern end at Waterloo Road, per the NJ State Parks trail guide for Kittatinny Valley State Park. From there it runs north through Kittatinny Valley State Park to its northern end in Branchville. Walkers and bikers can do as short or long an out and back as they like. For more fall walks, see our list of fall foliage hikes in Sussex County.
Getting to Stanhope by Train
Stanhope does not have its own train station. The closest stop is NJ Transit’s Netcong station at Main Street and Route 46 in Netcong, which is in Morris County, just across Lake Musconetcong from Stanhope. Per NJ Transit, Netcong is served by the Montclair-Boonton and Morris and Essex lines, and its two NJ Transit lots list no parking fee, with free parking on evenings and weekends. Check NJ Transit’s current timetable before planning a trip without a car.
By car, Stanhope sits right off Route 80 and Route 206, which makes it one of the easiest Sussex County towns to reach from Morris County and points east.
Know Before You Go
- Mailing address vs. town: Waterloo Village and Wild West City have Stanhope addresses but are in Byram Township. Several Route 206 businesses with Stanhope addresses are also in Byram.
- Lake access: The public boat ramp on Lake Musconetcong is near the dam on the southwest side, per the state. The lake is shallow, so paddle craft are a good fit.
- Seasonal hours: Waterloo Village museum days and Wild West City operate seasonally. Confirm dates on their official sites before you go.
- Borough contact: Stanhope Borough Hall, 77 Main Street, is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at 973-347-0159.
