Looking for things to do in Sparta NJ? Sparta Township is one of the largest towns in Sussex County, and it packs a lot into one place: the Tudor style storefronts and boardwalk at Lake Mohawk’s White Deer Plaza, more than 3,400 acres of state wildlife land on Sparta Mountain, a hands on history museum on Main Street, a 32 lane bowling center and a busy public library that runs programs nearly every day of the week.
Our team pulled this guide together from official sources so you can plan a day, a rainy afternoon or a full weekend. Below you will find what each spot offers, addresses where they are published, and the details worth knowing before you go. For food, we keep it short here and point you to our full Sparta and Lake Mohawk restaurant guide.
Outdoors in Sparta
Sparta Mountain Wildlife Management Area
The biggest outdoor draw in town is Sparta Mountain Wildlife Management Area, a 3,461 acre tract managed by the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife. Per the state’s official WMA map, the land stretches across Sparta and Hardyston in Sussex County and into Jefferson Township in Morris County. This is wild, rocky Highlands forest with woodland roads and footpaths, wetlands and big views from the ridges, and it is a favorite for birders, hikers and anyone who wants quiet woods close to home.
Keep in mind that a wildlife management area is not a park with a visitor center. There are no restrooms or staffed entrances, trails can be rocky and wet, and hunting is permitted in season. If you hike here in fall or early winter, wear blaze orange and check the NJ Fish and Wildlife website for current seasons and any posted trail closures before you head out.
If you want more ideas for fall walks in the area, see our roundup of the best fall foliage hikes in Sussex County.
Lake Mohawk and White Deer Plaza
Sparta’s signature spot is White Deer Plaza at Lake Mohawk, a 1920s planned lake community whose “Lake Mohawk Tudor” storefronts and tiered boardwalk were added to the state and national historic registers in 1988. The plaza sits at the north end of the lake near East Shore Trail and Winona Parkway (County Route 613), and its shops and restaurants are a classic stop for a walk, a coffee or dinner.
One important note: Lake Mohawk itself is private. The lake, its beaches and much of the shoreline are for members of the Lake Mohawk community, so visitors should plan on enjoying the plaza and its businesses rather than the water. We cover the history, the architecture and the access rules in detail in our separate Lake Mohawk guide.
History and Culture
Van Kirk Homestead Museum
The Sparta Historical Society runs the Van Kirk Homestead Museum at 336 Main Street. Exhibits cover local minerals and mining, the Civil War, a colonial kitchen showing how families cooked from 1780 to 1920, Thomas Edison, a Victorian parlor and transportation through time. Per the museum’s website, it is open April through December on the second and fourth Sundays of the month from 1 to 4 p.m., with a talk at 2 p.m. Groups can call (973) 726-0883 to reserve an appointment.
The museum’s fall 2026 calendar lists “Happy Birthday America, 250 Years” on Sunday, October 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. It is a good fit for families and for anyone following the America 250 celebrations around the county. Check the museum’s site for any changes before you go.
Sparta Public Library
The Sparta Public Library at 22 Woodport Road is one of the most useful free stops in town. As of fall 2026, the library lists hours of 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Programs include storytimes (including a bilingual storytime), after school crafts, tween and teen events, and adult offerings such as French and American Sign Language classes, Zoom yoga, Monday night mahjong and Saturday movies. The library also runs a museum pass program for free admission to museums and cultural attractions, plus a 3D printer and quiet rooms you can book. Call (973) 729-3101 for details.
Indoor Fun
Sparta Lanes
Sparta Lanes is a family owned, 32 lane bowling center at 43 Theatre Center (the business recommends 83 Woodport Road for GPS). It offers open bowling, leagues and tournaments, youth programs, birthday parties and live music, with food and drinks through the companion Sparta Pour House. Lanes can be reserved online. The posted hours open as early as 9:30 a.m. on some days and later on others, and the business notes that hours are subject to change, so call (973) 729-6135 before you go, especially on weekday afternoons and holidays.
Bowling is one of the best answers to a rainy Sussex County Saturday, and it pairs well with the library or a meal in town.
Close to Sparta
Sparta borders several towns with big name attractions, so a short drive opens up a lot more to do:

- Franklin: the “Fluorescent Mineral Capital of the World” is a few minutes farther north. Our things to do in Franklin NJ guide covers it.
- Byram: Wild West City is just south of Sparta, and it runs a popular Halloween season. Read about Haunted Wild West City.
A Simple Day in Sparta
If you only have one day, here is how our team would spend it:

- Lunch: head to White Deer Plaza for a stroll along the shops and a bite. Our Sparta dining guide has the full list.

- Evening: dinner in town, then catch up on what is happening this weekend with our weekend events roundup.
