The best things to do in Hamburg NJ, and in Hardyston Township that surrounds it, revolve around Crystal Springs Resort, mountain wildlife land and easy day trips to the rest of the Skylands. Hamburg is a small borough along Route 23 and Route 94 in northern Sussex County, and Hardyston wraps around it with golf courses, a big resort pool complex, a top rated spa and thousands of acres of protected forest.
Our team pulled this guide together from official sources so you can plan a day or a weekend. Below you will find the resort highlights, the outdoors, a note on the historic Gingerbread Castle, where to eat and what is close by in Franklin, Ogdensburg and Vernon.
Crystal Springs Resort (Hardyston)
Crystal Springs Resort is the main draw in the Hamburg area. Several of its properties sit in Hardyston Township but use a Hamburg mailing address, including the Grand Cascades Lodge at 1 Wild Turkey Way, which the resort describes as an AAA Four Diamond hotel. Reservations: 855.977.6473.
Golf
Four of the resort’s six courses are in Hardyston:
- Ballyowen: a Roger Rulewich links-style course that opened in 1998, treeless and wide open with 360-degree views of the Wallkill Valley. It offers caddie service. 137 Wheatsworth Road.
- Crystal Springs: the original 1992 Robert von Hagge design, playing just over 6,800 yards from the championship tees, with springs formed by old limestone quarries near the 11th hole.
- Wild Turkey: a Rulewich design with basin and ridge terrain and a signature par 3 7th that carries over a quarry lake.
- Cascades: a 9-hole family course that opened in 2009, with junior tees, oversized alternate cups and 18 holes of FootGolf.
The resort’s other two courses are close by but outside Hardyston: Black Bear is on Route 23 in Franklin, and the 9-hole Minerals course is in Vernon. As of early October 2026, the resort’s course status page listed all six courses as open. By November, play winds down as the weather turns, so check before booking a late fall round.
The Biosphere pool complex
The Biosphere at Grand Cascades Lodge is an indoor and outdoor tropical pool complex of about 10,000 square feet with a retractable roof, mountain views, an underground aquarium, a hot tub and a 140-foot water slide (48-inch height minimum). There is also a Taqueria serving tacos, salads, gelato and tropical drinks. Important: the resort lists the indoor pools as access for Grand Cascades Lodge guests only, so plan an overnight stay if the Biosphere is the goal. Hours change through the season and are posted on the Biosphere page.
Reflections Spa
Reflections Spa is also at Grand Cascades Lodge. The resort says it ranks No. 27 in the Spas of America Top 100 and No. 2 in New Jersey, with massage, beauty treatments and fitness classes. The resort’s other spa, Elements Spa, is at the Minerals Hotel in Vernon.
Dining and wine
The resort lists about 10 seasonal eateries. Highlights include Restaurant Latour, the outdoor Chef’s Garden and The Wine Cellar, which the resort says has received the Wine Spectator Grand Award every year since 2006. Browse current menus and hours on the resort dining page.
Other resort activities
The resort also offers an 18-hole natural grass putting course, a croquet lawn and the Wild Turkey Nature Trail. Its resort guest activities page lists the current schedule.
Hamburg Mountain Wildlife Management Area
For time outdoors, the Hamburg Mountain Wildlife Management Area covers more than 3,600 acres in Hardyston and Vernon townships, per the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife map and the New York New Jersey Trail Conference. It is managed wildlife land rather than a developed park, so expect woods roads and rugged terrain instead of marked nature center trails, and use the parking areas shown on the state map. Wildlife management areas are open to hunting in season, so wear blaze orange in fall and winter and check the NJ Fish and Wildlife hunting calendar before you go.
