Sussex County Community College in Newton is opening a free outdoor Fitness Court on its upper campus, with a public ribbon cutting and grand opening at 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2026. The open-air bodyweight gym sits along College Hill Road and has seven exercise stations plus a Studio classroom, and the college says it was built to give students, employees and the wider community free access to quick, effective workouts.
The project is a partnership between the college, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey and the National Fitness Campaign. According to the college’s announcement, SCCC is one of the first twenty Campaign Partners building a network of Fitness Courts across New Jersey with Horizon’s help. Our team is sharing the details so Sussex County neighbors know a new place to work out is now part of the Newton campus.
Grand Opening on October 15
Students, faculty, staff and community members are all invited to the ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 15. The college says the event will include a chance to tour the Fitness Court and learn how the seven stations and the Studio classroom work. The court is on the upper SCCC campus along College Hill Road, and the college’s main address is One College Hill Road, Newton, NJ 07860.
What You Will Find at the Fitness Court
The Fitness Court is an outdoor circuit where you use your own body weight for a full workout. On its capital projects page, SCCC describes it as a complimentary, open-air circuit-training gym for all fitness levels, with seven exercise zones that include core, squat and push stations.
- Seven stations: a full-body circuit built around bodyweight moves.
- Studio classroom: an added space that the grand opening tour will cover.
- Ages 14 and up: the college says exercises can be adapted for a range of abilities so people can go at their own pace.
- Free to use: the court was built to expand free workout access for students, employees and the community.

A Free App Works as Your Coach
Visitors can download the free Fitness Court App, which the college calls a “coach in your pocket.” The app offers guided workouts, instructional videos, fitness challenges and other resources, so first-timers can follow along station by station instead of guessing.
What Local Leaders Are Saying
“The commissioner board, along with senior services, is excited about another venture with Sussex County Community College to help with the health and fitness of our community,” said Sussex County Commissioner Chris Carney.
“This accessible space will encourage people of all fitness levels to stay active, connect with one another, and build healthy habits that can have a lasting impact on their lives,” said Dr. Cory Homer, President of Sussex County Community College.
The National Fitness Campaign’s press release notes that the group’s goal is to build a Fitness Court within a 10-minute bike ride of every American, and Newton now has one of its own.
