Who is in Top of the World?
Top of the World is a Carpenters tribute led by vocalist Debbie Taylor. The band’s official website says the music of the Carpenters “has always been close to Debbie’s heart” and describes her voice as capturing the warm tones and contralto range of Karen Carpenter. The goal of the show, per the band, is authentic versions of the hits, with the backstories behind the songs shared along the way.
The band’s site introduces Debbie alongside a lineup of musicians on guitar, keys, piano, saxophone, flute, drums, bass and backing vocals. The band is represented by Blue Raven Artist Management in Mountain Lakes.
What to expect from a Carpenters Christmas show
The Carpenters recorded holiday music alongside their pop hits, which makes them a natural fit for a December show. When this same Christmas show played the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown, the presenter described it as a mix of Carpenters hits and holiday favorites, with stories between songs, live musicians rather than backing tracks, multi-instrumentalists on keyboards, saxophone, trumpet and flute, and a multimedia slideshow during the performance.
Songs named by the band and the Mayo listing include “Close To You,” “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Rainy Days and Mondays,” “Please Mr. Postman,” “Yesterday Once More,” “Top of the World” and the Christmas favorite “Merry Christmas Darling.” The Newton set list has not been published, so treat that as a sense of the catalog rather than a promise.
The 3 p.m. start makes this one of the easiest holiday outings of the season for multigenerational groups. It is out before dinner and comfortably before dark roads get busy.
